Which New Smart Home Features Are Worth Paying For?

Separate the lasting upgrades from the passing hype.

Every September, the home technology industry showcases its latest ideas at CEDIA Expo, and the ensuing headlines run for weeks. If you're planning a build or a renovation, it's hard to tell which of the latest tech would work in your home and which will fade by spring. This type of technology is deeply woven into your home’s infrastructure and your daily routine, so the right choice goes a long way.

The best of this year's smart home technology makes a home easier to live in. Some of it is ready to build in now. Some are worth watching. We can advise you on both.

Voice Assistants Learn to Understand You

You probably already use voice commands. Say a set phrase, and your assistant runs a goodnight scene or controls a single device. That has worked well for years.

What's new is an assistant that understands ordinary, open-ended requests. The aim is that you can ask the house to feel cozy for dinner and have the lights and music respond, with no scene built in advance.

These assistants are still early. The major control makers are testing them now. They are understandably moving slowly on letting homeowners rewrite how the house behaves just by describing it, because one bad change could break something that works today.

Once the technology is ready, there will be fewer commands to remember and fewer scenes to edit.

Equipment Designed to Match Your Room

Manufacturers now treat finish as seriously as performance. A soundbar and subwoofer come in the same wood veneer as the TV cabinet, or in a fabric you pick the way you would pick upholstery.

Lighting is moving the same way. Some new decorative fixtures are built with their control hardware integrated, so the light suits the room's design while still responding to your scenes. Motorized drapery gets matching hardware too. One new line carries a smoke-toned crystal made just for its hardware.

Sound is getting harder to spot. Speakers can disappear behind a plastered or painted wall. A new in-wall bass speaker uses a small paintable grille at the bottom of the wall, a middle ground between fully hidden and fully powerful.

For you, that means choosing finishes with your designer, just as you choose door hardware. Pick them early, alongside the other finishes in the room. Finish-matched controls and hidden speakers are ready now.

Bigger Screens Indoors and Out

LED panels can now be made to order, with the tiny lights that form the picture packed tighter where you sit close and farther apart where you sit back. Some now include a built-in soundbar. The standout is a roughly 42-inch wall piece, finished in colors and textures you choose, that unfolds into a 105-inch display. It is tentatively due around mid-2027.

With LEDs getting so much attention, are projectors on their way out? Not yet. A projector and screen come closest to a real cinema, so a dark movie room still suits a projector, while a bright everyday room suits an LED.

In the yard, lighting and audio can now carry your indoor scenes outdoors, so linked systems can set the mood on the patio with a single touch in the kitchen. Outdoor LED screens are joining weatherproof TVs, and new speakers can steer bass toward your yard and away from your neighbor's patio.

Anyone who has lived through a Westchester winter knows freezing temperatures and nor'easters are hard on outdoor gear, so look for weather-rated equipment. The lighting and audio that tie into your indoor system are something we can already implement. The fold-out display is one to watch.

Not every new idea belongs in every home. Some of this year's ideas are ready to plan around now, and others can wait a year. The right mix depends on how you live and what you want your rooms to feel like. Contact our team to schedule a private consultation, and we will help you decide what fits your home.
